Author: Rafi Michael

In the ancient Greek society, marriage was regarded as an auspicious relationship. Marriage was very important to carry family chain.

In the Greek culture, every respectable woman became a wife if she could. In marriage, there was hardly room for choice. Destiny played an important role in solemnizing marriage.

Woman had no alternate than marriage. The sacred wedding rituals were interwoven by the various ceremonies. These ceremonies had ritual meaning and overlapping rites.

There is great evidence for these formalities, both literary and artistic, which helps to provide a complete account of Greek customs.

Offerings, dedications and sacrifices were made by the bride and the groom. Marriage consisted of a private contract where woman was transferred to her husband. Marriage consisted of transfer and transformation.

Transformation means actually giving the responsibility of the woman. Many things pointed towards her transformation like cutting of hair and offering them to virgin deities. Presenting the hair locks to the goddess often signifies the attainment of womanhood.

Greek society stresses upon the marriage of a girl at the age of fourteen. Boys are found eligible at the age of thirty after they have served military force. Girls are obliged to marry where their father wants.

Various types of rituals are followed in the marriage ceremony. Both the bride and groom take bath in the holy spring. On the wedding day, girl is dressed in the traditional attire. She is taken in veil to the banquet hall. She is accompanied by her friends and relatives.

Groom attires in the best outfit reaches the bride's home with a procession of friends, relatives and family members. Drums are played and crackers are burst to ward away evil spirit spirits. Music and dance plays a major role in the festivities. Bride and the groom wear a crown or garland to mark the occasion.

The actual transfer of the bride from father to groom takes place at night after the bridal banquet.

After the great feast the procession in a chariot takes place from the home of the bride to the home of the groom. Bride stands in the cart as her husband mounts it in preparation for their journey. Families follow the chariot by foot bearing gifts. Bride's mother carries the torch in the journey at night to light the way.

Bride eats an apple as a part of the incorporation rites which demonstrates her new union with her husband. Fruits and nuts are showered on the couple which acts as agents of fertility and prosperity.

One day the after the marriage, an outdoor procession of people is held.

It is called the Epaulia. It is an outdoor procession of people who brings gifts. Gifts generally include vases filled with greenery, baskets, pots, furniture, jewelry and combs.

Athenian marriage is relationship between a man and a woman who had the primary goal of producing children and maintaining the identity of the social and political community.

In ancient Sparta, the ceremony was very simple. After a tussle, to prove his superior strength, the groom would toss his bride over his shoulder and carried her off.

Slaves in the ancient Greek culture cannot marry because marriage was considered only for the privileged class.

Any children which were born from their masters were disposed off because the slaves have no right to rear children

How do states check for incest in marriage?
Question:
What I mean is I know that it is illegal for a brother and sister to get married or 2 cousins, but I have been married twice, and both times while they did ask for your parents' names and dates of birth it wasn't mandatory, and even if you have the same last name you could always say you aren't related. I mean there are alot of smiths. So is there a system in place that checks to see if people are related, or is it just the honor system?

What is the difference in rights, between incest marriage and same-sex marriage?
Question:
Gays claim that procreation is not a reason to deny them their want of same-sex marriage. Procreation is the primary argument against incest and incest marriage. So, what is the difference and why should gays be given rights that incest couples do not have?

Answer:
It seems that gays are still confused, because they reject the procreation argument and suggest that they can adopt. Well, incest couples can adopt and have hysterectomy's. Besides, without incest we would never have had the mutation of whites from albinism to the pinkish pigmentation of today. It seems that these gays wish to argue against incest marriage, which is same family marriage because they selfishly desire same-sex marriage. To them it is okay to have sex within the sexes, but not within the family. If you examine the DSM-IV, you will find that the gay-pedophile scientists were attempting to add a moral reasoning to pedophilia,so they were forced to change to the DSM-IV-R. No,not all gays are pedophiles, but these were gay pedophile scientists. Hildo, why don't you try reading the question or ignoring it if it is beyond your intellect. Lisa, why would you assume that these are children, the question says marriage which can only be between consenting adults. Who says that children are not hurt in same-sex marriages, you and other gays?

Do you believe in gay marriage?
Question:
I just want to ask what people think about gay marriage I personally don't think they should because marriage is a sacred tradition between man and woman, under the eyes of god (altho i don't believe) I personally have nothing against gays but that is just my opinionn what do you think ?

Answer:

Why should government be involved in marriage?
Question:
If the government got out of the marriage business, gay marriage would be effectively legalized. The government should be able to issue civil union certificates but not marriage certificates since marriage is different from culture to culture. Yes, Mormon Christianity and the Gay Culture counts as cultures. Islam also counts. That means that as long as it's consensual, the government should not be involved in marriage. That means you can't marry a goat and you can't marry a 12 year old and not get charged with statutory rape. This also effectively legalizes polygamy. Obamunism- Sigh... A goat cannot give consent and a having sex with a 12 year old girl is statutory rape. dr schmitty- Get rid of that. Instead "Civil Unionized" will be the new legal status. Marriage is between the couple (For Mormons: pun not intended). I've gone to Jewish weddings, Protestant weddings, catholic weddings, Chinese weddings, etc. it may or may not be religious, but it's definately cultural.

Answer:
One of the problems I have with liberal marriage is the claim that if people love one another (as long as it don't hurt anyone else), this should be ok? Then the stipulations begin? If this is truly how you feel there should be NO stipulations. I should be able to marry as many 12 year old girls that I want, if they can say yes... then they have given consent. Who cares if a goat can't consent, who are you to tell me I can't marry a goat! I'm not hurting anyone. See the list is literally endless, can I marry my grandmother, my daughter(s). It is ridiculous to make marriage anything other than one man, and one woman, period. Once we stray from this standard, then all bets are off!

Are there so many "virgins until marriage" in here?
Question:
I thought being chaste until your wedding night was passe in this day and age. Do you think the people who say these things get married at much younger ages than people who don't choose to wait? Also, are you surprised that the divorce rate is inversely proportional to marriage age (i.e. on average, the younger a couple is when they get married, the more likely they are to get divorced)? Why do you think those numbers are the way they are? Source: http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/family/sc-fam-0513-young-m arried-20100513,0,272462.story I have no problem with people waiting. I admire the dedication of those who do. I just think our society puts so much pressure on people to have sex that it causes people to rush to the alter when they aren't ready.

Answer:
I choose to stay a virgin until I find a compatible partner, but I don't believe in waiting in marriage (mostly because I just don't plain want to, and I don't wish to get married until my late 20s/early 30s anyway). I would hate to marry someone and then find we are sexually incompatible because we don't share the same fantasies or are repulsed by each others. Being sexually compatible is extremely important in a marriage (because sex goes further than just the missionary position). While it is not more important than loving one another nor keeping sound finances, sex can drive a couple apart. I'd rather know what I'm getting into first than to jump in with both feet and eyes closed. edit: Also, I'm a firm believer in this: If a man wishes to only marry a virgin, then he had better be a virgin himself!

Are any psychologists researching why half the marriages in the USA fail?
Question:
Dr, Norman Anderson asked a group of his colleagues this question three years ago. Has there been any new research on this topic. Dr Anderson was, of course chiding his colleagues for researching safe little niches and leaving the useful questions alone..

Is Same-Sex Marriage Legal in the US?
Question:
I was researching LGBT social movements on wikipedia earlier when I came accross a map showing areas of the world where things are legal, areas where they are not, and also areas where there is no recognition of same-sex couples. The US fell under the latter category. This confuses me. Is this map out of date? Because that just doesn't sound right. I have also learnt that same-sex marriage isn't legal in the UK yet... and same-sex sexual activity wasn't even legal until 1967... My country disappoints me, The world disappoints me :/
